Referring Vets

Diagnostic Imaging - referral

The Diagnostic Imaging service provides imaging services to the small and large animal clinics within the hospital, including radiology, fluoroscopy, ultrasound, CT, nuclear medicine and MRI. We offer reporting services to veterinary practices nation wide, and actively provide important continuing seminars within Australia and overseas.

The Diagnostic Imaging service can be contacted via vet-radiology@unimelb.edu.au

Teleradiology
Teleradiology is available for veterinarians. This allows for digital images to be transmitted via the Internet for reporting, allowing a more timely response from the radiologists.

Images for reporting must be in DICOM format.

Images can be electronically sent to the Diagnostic Imaging service using DROPBOX. To install DROPBOX, go to https://www.dropbox.com and click download.

  • 1. Load the images into a dropbox folder
  • 2. Share the dropbox folder with our dropbox email address vet-radiology@unimelb.edu.au
  • 3. Email vet-radiology@unimelb.edu.au with the following information
        a) A referral letter
        b) Relevant clinical history pertaining to the case
Alternatively, if your images are on a disc or hard-copy they can be mailed to us. Please post along with the referral letter and relevant clinical history to

Canine Hip and Elbow Dysplasia
Specific radiographic studies are performed of the hips and elbows for dog owners and breeders wishing to evaluate their pets for canine hip and elbow dysplasia. The radiographs are performed as part of the scheme aimed to reduce the incidence of canine hip and/or elbow dysplasia as recommended by the Australian National Kennel Club (ANKC). PennHIP radiographs can also be performed.

Victorian Biomedical Imaging Capability project
The Victorian Biomedical Imaging Capability (VBIC) provides a coordinated network of capabilities and research capacity in medical imaging to support universities and medical institutes. The $25M investment by the Victorian State Government and the grant recipients, will provide the Victorian biomedical imaging research community with access to cutting-edge imaging equipment. Without this infrastructure, universities and clinical researchers would be unable to pursue research and development facilities that are available in other leading biomedical disciplines.

By enhancing the ability to conduct the highest quality of medical research, increasing skilled jobs in Victoria and linking imaging resources across research institutions, this project promotes Victoria as one of the world’s elite medical research locations and facilities collaboration with national and international partners.
